Your mother and grandmother are right, they always are, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. And this statement has even more force if you are travelling somewhere where you will spend the day walking.

So to help you get your day off to a good start, here we bring you the best places to have breakfast in Malaga. And forget about large supermarkets or chains. You’ll have breakfast in Malaga like a local. Grab your Pitufo y sombra* Good morning!

La Recova

The best thing about the Church of San Juan is that it is right in front of La Recova. Let yourself be enveloped by its decoration of objects that are out of print, old, antiquated or that you couldn’t even imagine. Although what will really envelop you is its zurrapa, its manteca colorá and its well-filled sandwiches.

Order a coffee and feel how you recharge your batteries with every bite and every sip. If you’re running a little late, don’t worry, they’ll still be there at midday, to make your vermouth or snack a unique and special moment. You won’t want to leave, you’ll see.

Casa Aranda

Churro with chocolate plus Malaga, just like Casa Aranda. You don’t have to be a mathematical genius to solve this equation, although you must be from Malaga or have read this post. It is an emblematic place.

Since 1932 they have been making the best thick, hot chocolate you have tasted in many years. It retains the charm of those years when its seats were occupied by writers and lovers of literature.

Churrería La Malagueña

We continue with places with charm, with personality and with churros, lots of churros, which is what we have come for. Enjoy churros and porras, different, more traditional things in the centre of Malaga. Although if we talk about Churrería La Malagueña we have to talk about its tejeringos. That’s what you have to order. Then you can order a sandwich to go with it if you want, but the tejeringo has to be the king of the table. You will love its wood and marble decoration.

Bar El Diamante

Opened its doors in 1949 and in the 70’s we believe it underwent a profound restructuring and decoration that lasts…until today. To enter El Diamante is to enter the history of the city, its interior will absorb you and its milk with strawberries will make you stay there for hours and hours. Well, and their fantastic sandwiches, of course.

Cheesequería

Okay, this may not be the mythical indoor café with wood, marble floors, bullfighting posters and thousand-year-old coffee that you imagine. It may not have been open for more than a century. But we couldn’t resist talking about this marvellous place, which will delight the sweetest in the house.

Taste, enjoy, swim in a sea of cheesecakes with a touch of pistachio, Lotus and chocolates of all kinds. They come in a thousand forms, even sugar-free and gluten-free. It’s a great alternative if you want to swap churros and chocolate for sweets and juice.

*If you’ve come this far, you deserve an explanation. The “pitufo” is a type of bread, so called because of its small size, “pitufo” in Spanish means “smurf”. It’s actually a normal size, a small bun. “Sombra” is a type of coffee. Depending on the amount of coffee you drink in relation to the milk, the Café Central de Málaga gave name to the type of coffee, ranging from the “solo”, with no milk at all, to the “nube” with barely any coffee and a lot of milk, passing through the sombra, the corto or the mitad, among others.
